When a material is heated, it gains thermal energy. Therefore, its particles move faster and its temperature rises. Also when a substance is cooled, it loses thermal energy, which causes its particles to move more slowly and its temperature to drop. Heat makes many solids, especially metals, softer and  melt and easier to shape. As the temperature rises, most solids change into liquid state.
