Towards the end of the story, Lushkoff meets Sergei and tells him that it was Olga who had in fact truly brought about a change in him.
Whenever Lushkoff would go to the wood-shed, Olga would yell at him, and feel so bad for him that she would start crying. Then she would cut the wood for him. She did this many times. In fact, she was the one who always chopped the wood while Lushkoff got paid for it. However, Lushkoff understood that she was sincerely concerned about him and considering her goodness, he quit drinking. Giving up that bad habit improved things for him. Therefore, the turning point remained his interaction with Olga and her scolding him, yet being nice to him.
