Swami Dayanand Saraswati was not against the idol worship from his childhood. His childhood name was Mul Shankar.
Once he was praying to Lord Shiva on the day of Shivratri, then he saw that a rat climbed on the statue and start eating fruits and sweets that are there for the worship. Then, he thought if this stone can't help his own from rats then how can it help the other people.
This incidence changed his life and he loses his faith in idol worship.
