In 1662, the port city of Bombay was gifted King Charles II of England upon marrying Catherine of Braganza.

The king was however, not very keen on ruling a kingdom so far from his native land and so, he rented out Bombay to the East India Company for only 10 pounds of gold every year.

The concept of dowry has been a tradition for marriages till this decade. The bride’s family has to provide a sum of money, jewels or a piece of land to the groom as a token of appreciation for their wedding.

In the year 1662, the Portugal king ruled over the eastern parts on India. His sister was fixed for an alliance with King Charles – II. The king offered the port city of Bombay as dowry for marrying his sister Catherine de Braganza.

The East India Company leased the city after some years and currently the city is called as Mumbai.
