Stability of ionic solids depends on lattice energy.Latice energy is the amount of energy released to form one mole of ionic compound from its gaseous constituents. It is released in the form of heat when two ions are brought together to form a solid. The sum of all the interactions gives lattice energy within the crystal. There is a strong interaction between the ions within the crystal.

Hence a strong ionic interaction is responsible for the force of attraction between the particles in a salt crystal.
