Neutralisation - Higher. When an acidic compound dissolves in water it produces hydrogen ions, H+. These ions are responsible for the acidity of the solution. When an alkaline compound dissolves in water it produces hydroxide ions, OH−. These ions are responsible for the alkalinity of the solution.
