single discount of 14 % is better deal

in 14% discount

=1500-14/100*1500

=1500 - 14*15

=1500 - 210

=1290

in 2 successive discounts of 12 and 2%

=1500 - 12/100 * 1500

=1500 - 12 * 15

= 1500 - 180

=1320

=1320 - 2/100 * 1320

=1320 - 2/10 * 132

=1320 -  26.4

=1293.6

so, 1293.6 > 1290

hence 14% discount is better

Let x be the initial price

Single 14% discount:

14% discount = 14% of x = 0.14x

Price after discount = x = 0.14x = 0.86x

Two successive discounts:

12% discount = 12% of x = 0.12x

Price after discount = x - 0.12x = 0.88x

2% discount = 2% of 0.88x = 0.02 x 0.88x = 0.0176x

Price after discount = 0.88x - 0.0176 x= 0.8624x

Compare:

Since 0.8624x  > 0.86x

⇒A single 14% discount is a better deal

Answer: A single 14% discount is a better deal
