Sucrose is a disaccharide. Disaccharides are:

  • It is a type of carbohydrate which is made up of two simple sugars bonded together. The common examples of disaccharides are sucrose, lactose, and maltose.
  • Sucrose has one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose.
  • When disaccharides are consumed the enzymes of the digestive system break them into small smaller carbohydrates(monosaccharides)  so that they can be absorbed by the blood.
  • These provide energy to the body. Sucrose can be found in a variety of food like sugar cane, processed food and beverages, bakery items like cake and biscuits , jams, candies, soft drinks and jellies as well.
