Transportation problem which is a subclass of a linear programming problem (LPP).

Explanation:

Transportation problem:

  • A transportation problem is a significant type of LPP (Linear Programming Problem) in which the total transportation cost is reduced, depending on the demand and supply of resources and targets, respectively, from the set of goods sources to the set of targets.
  • This is also called as Hitchcock problem.

Transportation problems types:

Balanced:

  • When both demand and supply are equal, it is known as a balanced traffic problem.

Unbalanced:

  • When both demand and supply are not equal, it is known as unbalanced traffic problems.
  • An unbalanced traffic problem has a dummy row or dummy column that be added as needed to make it a symmetric problem.
  • Then the SCE symmetry problem can be solved as well.

Solving methods:

There are three methods to find the initial basic possible solution:

1. Northwest corner cell method.

2. Low call cell mode.

3. Method of Vogel's Approximation (VAM)
