(1) Three statements are correct

  1. (A) Heat loss and heat gain is a function of surface area: TRUE
  2. (B) Under the unfavourable condition, Zooplankton species enter into diapause condition: TRUE
  3. (C) Desert lizards lack the physiological ability to deal with high                                temperature: TRUE
  4. (D) Mammals in colder climates always follow Allen's rule FALSE
  • Heat loss/heat gain is a function of surface area because the smaller animals have a large surface area relative to their volume
  • They also tend to lose the heat of their bodies very quickly as the temperature is colder outside which is why smaller animals are rarely found in polar regions.
  • Zooplankton species are incapable of migration and avoiding stress by escaping time. They reduce their metabolic activity and go into ‘dormancy’.   Zooplankton species in water bodies are known to enter a stage of suspended development known as diapause.
  • Desert lizards don't have the physiological ability that mammals do. The high temperatures of their habitat are managed by their body heat/ temperature regulation. This tends to be fairly constant and is done by behavioural means.
  • There are huge amounts of exceptions in accordance with the Allens' rule
  • Animal populations are in accordance with the predictions of Allen's rule, it is generally observed not all of them abide by this rule.
