Capitalism is driven by desire of personal gain, which (if I am not mistaken) is accepted as a healthy, even if unfortunate, foundation of the system. It has proved to be very effective, even if feels ruthless at times (so it is softened by the moral request to treat others as you would like to be treated), but it is the best among all available bad choices. It benefits from competition, it allows freedom of expression, etc. That's the story we are told.

What is omitted and even carefully avoided is mentioning that capitalism also benefits from cooperation. Without it the society would fall apart. Business is not possible without trust and cooperation. So, capitalism works only as long as there is a diversity that competes and cooperates freely.
