What you should do is get them to a common denominator so you can easily compare them.

We can see a common denominator would be 40 (by multiplying the current denominators i.e. 8*5)

so in order to get 5/8 = something/40 we multiply both top and bottom by 5 giving 25/40.

To get 3/5 = something/40 we multiply top and bottom by 8 giving 24/40

So we know:

5/8 = 25/40 and

3/5 = 24/40

Clearly, 25 is bigger than 24 so 5/8 is bigger than 3/5.

Answer:

5/8 is bigger.

Solution:

The given fractions are 5/8 and 3/5.

The above-given fractions are unlike.

For comparing fractions, we have to convert all unlike fractions into like fractions.

To do so, we have to take the LCM of the denominators.

LCM of 8 and 5 is 40.

∴ 5/8 = 5/8 × 5/5 = 25/40

3/5 = 3/5 × 8/8 = 24/40

Now the unlike fractions have been converted into like fractions.

5/8 = 25/40             --------------- (i)

3/5 = 24/40             --------------- (ii)

Comparing (i) and (ii), we get,

25/40 > 24/40

5/8 > 3/5

Hence, 5/8 is bigger.
