When diethyl ether is heated with excess of HI is Ethyl iodide only. The reaction is explained below :
- Alcohols are formed when ether is reacted with HI and corresponding haloalkanes are formed on reaction of ether with excess of HI .
- So, when diethyl Ether is heated with hydro iodic acid than ethyl alcohol and ethyl iodide is formed.
CH3CH2OCH2CH3 + HI → CH3CH2-I + CCH3CH2-OH
- And when present in excess the ethyl alcohol formed under reaction with HI is further to give ethyl iodide.
CH3CH2-OH + HI → CH3CH2-I + H2O
- Hence, the overall reaction comes out to be :
CH3CH2OCH2CH3 + 2HI → 2CH3CH2-I + H2O
- So, only ethyl iodide is formed.
