Which is having a higher value of momentum - A bullet of mass 10 g moving with a velocity of 400m/s or a cricket ball of mass 400g thrown with the speed of 90 km/h ? 12)Show that weight of an object on the moon is 1/6 of its weight on the earth. [Given : mass of earth = 5.98*1024 kg, mass of moon = 7.36*1022 kg, radius of earth = 6.37*106 m, radius of moon =1.74*106 m]

1. momentum in case of bullet:
mass= 10g=0.01kg
velocity= 400 m/s
p=m x v
= 0.01 x 400
= 4 kg - m/ s
momentum in case of cricket ball :
mass=400g =0.4kg
velocity = 90km/ h =90x5/18 = 25 m/ s
p= 0.4 x 25
= 10 kg -m/ s
hence cricket ball possess greater momentum.
2. the formula for calculating acceleration due to gravity is
g= Gx M/R^2
here G= 6.7 x 10 minus 11 N m^2/ kg ^2
mass of moon = approximately 7.4 x 10^ 22 kg
radius of moon R =approximately 1740km
=1.74 x 10^6
now substitute all values in above formula we get
g= 6.7 x 10 minus 11 x 7.4 x 10^ 22/1.74 x 1.74 x 10^ 22
=1.63 m/ s^ 2

We know that,

Momentum = mass(kg) x velocity(m/s). So,

Bullet

velocity:    400m/s

mass:    10g = 0.01kg

momentum =  400m/s x  0.01kg  = 4 kg m/s

cricket ball:

velocity:  90km/hr = 90000m/(60x60)s  = 25m/s

mass:  400g= 0.4kg

momentum= 0.4kg x 25m/s  = 10kg m/s

Therefore the cricket ball has a higher momentum of 10kg m/s as compared to that of the bullet of 4kg m/s
