NaCl is the molecular formula for sodium chloride, common table salt. It doesn't specify what form it is in or its concentration in a mixture or solution.

0.5 M NaCl denotes a "one half molar" solution" of NaCl. The 0.5 M is the concentration of the solution. 0.5 M means one half of one gram-mole of solid NaCl salt dissolved in one liter of pure water. Sometimes the M is capitalized sometimes not, but it means the same thing.

1 gram-mole of NaCl is the sum of the molecular weights of sodium (Na) which is 22.99 gram per mole plus chlorine (Cl) which is 35.45 gram per mole. Therefore it is 58.44 grams per mole of NaCl and 0.5 mole NaCl is 29.22 grams.

Add water to 29.22 grams of salt until you get 1 liter of volume, stir it until the salt completely dissolves and mixes and voila! you will have a 0.5 M NaCl solution. Sea or ocean water is about 0.6 M NaCl.

hope it is helpfull to you
