Answer:

I think that basically there is a difference between Art and Visual Reality, which may be Beauty or Horror, or anything in between. And, given a choice between the two media as you have asked the question, I would choose Art. I'll try to explain.

I'm looking out my window at the moment, and I see some gorgeous big trees and a bright blue sky filled with puffy white cumulus clouds. They are exquisitely beautiful, but they are not Art. My garden has some very nice, colorful glazed pots in which I plant pretty flowers, but their purpose is functional. They are not Art.

I can choose to paint a painting of the trees and the cloud-filled sky or the flower-filled pots and combine it with whatever amount of skill I have and that will be Art. I have combined my skill with a creative intention. Even if I tried to replicate the images of those things perfectly, I could not do so. My humanity - my human hands and mind and heart - would intervene and force me to create something new. This is what we call Art.

I can also have an intention and make the choice to take a photograph of the same trees, cloud-filled sky and flowers in the pot. The images will be Beautiful, but it is the trees, the sky, the clouds and the flowers/pot that are beautiful. It is not the photograph, which merely recorded the Visual Reality of the Beauty by a photo -mechanical process, requiring little or no skill (particularly with today's cameras). There are no human elements that alter reality in the equation. Therefore, the Visual Reality exists, but not Art.

The Visual realities of Beauty, Horror and everything in between, simply exist in the world. And, their existence can be visually recorded through the vehicle of choice /

intention. However, it requires the combination of both human skill and choice/intention for the creation of Art, a new thing that goes beyond reality.
