NaCl is more soluble in water as when water is added NaCl breaks down into Na+ and Cl- as there is only one atom of each. Whereas there is one atom of Mg and 2 atoms of Cl in MgCl2 which makes its separation harded than that of dissolving NaCl.

Hope this helps you...

MgCl_2 is more soluble in water.

  • NaCl breaks down in the water as Na^+ and Cl^- ions and MgCl_2 as Mg^{+2} and Cl^- ions.
  • Magnesium ion has high charge than sodium ion so, water easily attacks small magnesium cation.
  • So, hydration energy increases and it easily dissolves in water than sodium ions.
  • That's why MgCl_2 is more soluble in water than sodium chloride.
