Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices or Intrauterine Devices (IUCDs or IUD) are the most widely accepted contraceptive or contraception currently used and approved by India. They are devices which constitute composite materials made of plastic, metal or a combination of the two which is eventually inserted into the uterus to prevent conception before pregnancy. IUDs are also called loops, spirals, rings, bows, shields upon their function and shape. The inert IUDs are made purely from polyethylene which have been impregnated it's either barium sulphate or pure stainless steel, for an example, Lippes loop is based on this composition. The exact mechanism of inert IUDs have been put on a doubt clearance as it is still not clear what function it actually does.
The Intrauterine contraceptive devices have the following working:
1) There is an impairment of the sperm ascent (reach towards the Fallopian tube in the ampulla, which is restricted).
2) There is quick tubal motility resulting in premature migration of fertilized eggs into the uterus before it is ready for receiving it (causing the sperms to die inside the Fallopian tube or ampulla, since the sperms are made to function and fertilize the eggs thereafter preventing pregnancy).
3) Histological and biological including biochemical changes occur in the endometrial lining of the endometrium which have gametotoxic and spermicidal effect (suppresses both of the sex gametes).
