Air or oxygen is not required for calcination of ores .

EXTRA INFO :

⚫ Calcination is a process of heating the concentrated ore in the absence of air so that the ore is oxidised and contains oxygen in its molecule .

⚫ Calcination is generally done for the carbonate ores because they already have oxygen .

⚫ The ores are oxidised to metal oxides because oxides are easy to reduce .

⚫ After reduction of the metal oxide the process of refining the ore is carried out to obtain the pure metal .

⚫ The other process used in conversion of ore to oxides is roasting .

⚫ Roasting is generally done for sulphide ores .

⚫ Roasting is done by burning the given concentrated ore in excess of air to a high temperature .

⚫ This is generally done for compounds which do not have oxygen as its constituent .
