(d) Uses as temporary structure which is built in a river, lake etc. to remove water from an area and make it possible to carry on the construction work under reasonably dry conditions

Explanation:

The simple pile foundation is used mainly for moving loads from superstructures to stronger, more compact & less compressible rock/soil  rock at depth through water/weak compressible strata , increasing effective base size and resistant horizontal load.

There are different situations when a pile foundation is used

  • If below the structure there exists  high groundwater table.
  • If the load is heavy and standardised for the superstructure.
  • Where soil which is highly compressible is present at low depth.
  • If the plant is situated by the river bed or the seaside etc., it is advisable to protect the structure where necessary.
  • If the structure is near a passing canal/ deep drainage pile foundation is suggested.
  • When the soil is very weak and the soil can not be excavated to the appropriate depth.
  • If the foundation trenches can not be kept dry by any measure because of a strong inflow of drainage
