Hot spots refer to the most threatened and the richest of the animal and plant life of the earth. They exhibit the highest number of endemic species. In order to qualify as a hot spot, a region must meet two essential criteria, that is, the area must comprise at least 1500 species of vascular plants, and the region should have lost about 70 percent of its original habitat.

Some of the key elements have been taken into consideration and the biodiversity hotspots, which tops the list in regard to these five elements are labeled as hottest hot spots.

The elements or factors are endemic vertebrates, endemic plants, endemic plants/area ratio, endemic vertebrates/area ratio, and remaining primary vegetation as a percent of original amount. One of the world's hottest hot spot of the biological diversity in terms of the above-mentioned elements is Madagascar.
