Which is smaller static or sliding friction and why?

Hello!
Static friction is smaller than sliding friction. Frictional force is greater when one body slides over the other.when the body is static the force to keep it in position is less.But when it is moving the force of friction brings it to a halt against the inertia of motion.this is why sattic friction is less than sliding friction.
