literacy requirement this was obviously intended to prohibit African American from voting since many were illiterate due to lack of education

Literacy requirement is the right answer.

Jim Crow legislation was a combination of state and provincial ordinances that authorised racial dis-crimination.  The Whites Southern practiced various methods to keep away African Americans from voting. Therefore, they did not allow illiterate people to vote. The White Southern argued that the blacks could not understand what they presented to them though they could. Hence, African Americans were not given the right to vote.  

It was only after the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that the Blacks or the African Americans got the right to vote, with the end of Jim Crow Era.
