  • The river Banas is a river lies completely in Rajasthan in western India. It is a tributary of river Chambal which is a tributary of the river Yamuna that merges into the Ganges. Approximately 4000 (that is from c.3000-1500 BCE) years old Ahar civilisation spread all over the near vicinity of river Aahar in present-day Udaipur district. This civilisation flourished alongside the Indus Valley civilisation, on the banks of the river Banas and Bairach in Udaipur, Wagan and Gambhiri in Chittorgarh, Kothari and Khari in Bhilwara upto Ajmer.
  • Copper was mostly used in Ahar civilisation as also utensils of red and black brown colours were in common use.  Rice was known to the people of this civilisation whose economy was mainly based upon domestication of cattle. The house were made of pucca bricks. The Aahar people exploited the copper ores that was found in the Aravalli Range, which encompassed the Ahar region, to make axes and other objects.
  • They sustained on several crops, comprising barley, rice and wheat and were the 1st farmers in the region of Mewar and even preceded the Harappans They were skilled in pottery making and had no difficulty in the storing food and water. The Ahar people abandoned their sites in 1800 BCE and this happened concurrently alongside the waning of Indus valley civilization. The cause for abandoning their sites was supposed to be natural calamities or also due to the decline of the Indus Valley civilisation that had directly hit the economy of Ahar people owing to fall in trade between these 2 cultures.
