IV curve similar to a tunnel diode characteristic curve. It has negativedifferential resistance in the shaded voltage region, between v1 and v2.

Tunel Diode, SCR, Single phase AC motors are the devices that exhibit negative resistance characteristics.

Definition of negative resistance;

  • Negative resistance is the phenomena where the voltage drops across the circuit.
  • while the current increases and circuit decreases.

Characteristics of Tunel Diode;

  1. Tunel Diode carries the characteristics of negative resistance.
  2. It has very high speed and low capacitance that can be used in microwave RF applications as an active device.
  3. Diode has 'N' shape curve that refers as negative.
  4. The current changes according to the applied voltage.
  5. As being a negative differential resistance in their operation, allows them to be used as oscillators, amplifiers, and switching circuits.

Thus it exhibits voltage-controlled negative resistance.

Characteristics of SCR;

  1. It  has forward and reverse characteristics defining as negative resistance.
  2. SCR remains in a blocking state as long as the forward anode to cathode voltage.
  3. The high voltage and low current mode that distinguishes the SCR resistance.
  4. As the reverse voltage is equal to greater than breakdown voltage is applied a large current is flowed.

Hence, SCR is a member of the thyristor family that belongs to the Negative resistance.

Characteristics of single phase AC motors;

  1. Single phase AC motors signifies as induction motor and smaller in size and lighter in weight.
  2. They are highly efficient with high speed of voltage.
  3. They are used in applications where moderate starting torque is required and where starting period is small.

Therefore,  the SCR, single phase AC motors and Tunel diode belongs to the negative resistance. The current increases as soon as the voltage drops.  It is a behavior where there is negative slope, and operating in a particular region gives the chances of the occurrence of a negative resistance.
