The figures of speech in the first stanza of Teenager's Prayer are:

- Metaphor: The stanza talks about the teenager's need to choose the road that he or she must choose to take. Here, road is metaphorical for path of life. It talks about what he or she should do and how they should choose to spend every new beginning of a day.
- Inversion: This figure of speech means to change the general structure of a line from the way it would usually be written to a way in which it suits the general rhythm and acoustics of the poem. For example, in the first stanza, instead of saying 'I must make decisions', the poet says 'Decisions I must make' which results in giving us a rhyme pair of 'make' and 'take'.
