He is happy = Main/independent clause

Though he is poor = Subordinate/dependent clause

What is a clause ?

A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and it owns predicate.

OR

A clause contains main clause , dependent clause and conjunctions.

The two types of clauses are :-

  • Independent clause (Main clause)
  • Dependent clause (Sub-ordinate clause)

Conjunctions are the words which join two words ot two sentences.

The word which joins two words/sentences in a clause is known as Co-ordinating conjunctions.

Some examples :-

  • I like to play football and cricket.

==> And = Co-ordinating clause

==> I like to play football = Main clause

==> And cricket = Sub-ordinate clause

  • The weather was cold , yet bright and sunny.

==> Yet = Co-ordinating clause.

==> The weather was cold = Main clause

==> Yet bright and sunny = Sub-ordinate clause

  • I will eat a hamburger or a hotdog

==> Or = Co-ordinating clause

==> I will eat a hamburger = Main clause

==> Or a hotdog = Sub-ordinate clause
