The main ore of Aluminium is Bauxite.

Aluminium is extracted from its ore, bauxite. This contains aluminium oxide. The aluminium oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite to lower the temperature needed to melt the oxide.The ore contains aluminium oxide. This will eventually be reduced (have its oxygen removed) by  

electrolysis. But first we have to use chemical separation to extract the aluminium oxide from the rest of the rock in the ore. For every 5 tonnes of bauxite we get only 1 tonne of aluminium. The rest is liquid waste which is pumped into shallow storage ponds, where it gradually dries in the sun.
