Different different sources and methods of irrigation are used depending on the topography,soils and rainfall and availability of groundwater ,nature of rivers and requirement of crops.
1)Canal Irrigation-about 40% of the total irrigated area in the country is done through Canal irrigation. It is more suitable in Northern India.
2)Tank Irrigation-about 12% of the total irrigated area is done by the tank irrigation.This is more popular in Peninsular India.
3)Well Irrigation-about 40% of the irrigated area is done by well irrigation in India. This is prevalent in northern plains. Among surface Wells and tubewells, the latter is the most significant and advantageous.
4) some modern methods of irrigation include sprinkler irrigation, and drip irrigation. They are not exclusively used because they are expensive.
