Lithium  metal  is in group 1 in the periodic table,therefore it is  highly  reactive.This explains  why it is stored to avoid  any contact  with oxygen.

When it comes in contact with air ,it violently reacts  with it .It is  burned  in air to form an oxide of  lithium oxide  which  is white.The reaction is as shown below:

Lithium  +  Oxygen ⇒ Lithium Oxide

4Li (s) + O₂ (g) ⇒ 2 Li₂O (s)
