Metaphase is the earlier phase than late anaphase were five steps occurs:

1)Leptotene 2)Zygotene 3)Pachytene 4)Diplotene and 5)Diakinesis

In this phase the number of chromosome are divided between two daughter cells and this is the phase where crossing over of chromosomes resulting into the variation in the daughter cell's genes occurs.
