Lithium nitrate decomposes to give its oxide, nitrogen dioxide (reddish brown gas) and oxygen on heating, similar to the nitrates of most divalent and trivalent metals. Ammonium nitrate also does not give reddish brown nitrogen dioxide on heating. It decomposes to colourless nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and water.
