Xylem is used for transportation of Water Particulates. The flow is uni-directional ; meaning that there cannot be a back flow of the material, since the water gets used up for the tropic means, the water moves up from the root apex to the leaves.

Phloem is used for transportation of Food and Water particulates both. The flow is multi directional ; meaning that the materials can go both up and down from the leaves to root apex and vice versa. The food material can flow down from the leaves which are the main sites of synthesis , to the roots for tropism
