QUESTION
Which island nation invented the sport of golf as we now know it?
ANSWER : Scotland
Golf is one of the few sports with a long history and one whose history is still a hot topic. However, the game as is played today can be traced back to Scotland in the 15th century.
The game was then banned in Scotland following several parliamentary acts by Scotland prohibiting the game. The acts were passed in 1457 by King of Scotland, James II, and reaffirmed both in 1471 and 1491.
In 1500 the ban in Scotland was lifted and the St Andrews’ people’s right to play the game on Old Course was recognized by Archbishop Hamilton’s Charter. The St. Andrews old course is reduced from 22 holes to 18 holes. This then became the recognized format for golf throughout the world.
Golf was first played at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 after 112 years.
- The modern-day golf, i.e., the golf played over 18 holes, originated in Scotland and is played from the Middle Ages onwards. The exact date it originated is still unclear.
- The first mention of the golf was documented in 1457 Act of the Scottish Parliament.
- It was due to the edict issued by the king of Scotland, King James II.
