Tab key:

The verb tabulate, which meaning "to arrange data in a tabular, or table, form," is where the term tab is derived from. The usage of the space bar and backspace key was laborious and repetitious while attempting to type a table (of numbers or text) on a typewriter. This was made easier by adding a horizontal bar to the tabulator rack mechanism. The carriage would move forward to the following tabulator stop when the tab key was pressed. The first tabulator stops were movable clips that the user could arrange whatever they liked on the rack. In 1900, Fredric Hillard submitted a patent application for such a device.

The tab system excelled as a quick and reliable technique to consistently indent the beginning line of each paragraph. This was frequently accomplished with a first tab stop at 5 or 6 characters, which is much larger than the indentation used during typesetting. But for numerical data, the location of the least significant digit is where the tab stop should be placed. It is practical but slow to tab to this spot and then press the backspace key to return to the first digit's place. Numerous designs for numeric tabs have been put up. For instance, Harry Dukes and William Clayton submitted a patent application in 1903 for a tab mechanism that included many tab keys labelled 1, 10, 100, etc. the simple act of pressing 1 was a basic tab. Pressing 10 moved the cursor up a spot before the tab, whereas pressing 100 moved it up two spaces.

The Royal Typewriter Company employee Edward Hess applied for a patent in 1904 for a system in which the tab stops were permanently placed on the tab bar. Initially, tab stops were set by adding and removing clips from the tab rack. The tab stop for that particular column was simply rotated in or out of engagement to set or reset a tab for that column.  James Koca submitted a patent application in 1940 for a device that made it possible to set and clear the tab stops for each column from the keyboard, doing away with the requirement for the typist to lean over the machine's back and directly operate the tab rack.  Tab set and tab clear are normally the labels for these keys, if they are present.

Tab key is used to move between fields while typing  the information.
