The Chola dynasty is one of the most successful and longest-ruling dynasties of the world and it had ruled major parts of South India and parts of South East Asia for nearly five centuries. They ruled the areas covered by river Kaveri and the areas south of Tungabhadra river and their capital was Tanjore.

The most notable Cholan kings were Rajaraja Chola and he was succeeded by his son "Rajendra Chola". The two official languages of the Chola period was Tamil and Sanskrit.

The Sangam literature reached its height during the Cholan period. All the major religious texts, political texts, etc were written mostly in Tamil and Sanskrit. Although other languages like Kannada was also used along with other tribal languages Tamil and Sanskrit were used for official purposes.
