The Great Rift Valley is the result of a divergent boundary. There are two plates that are being pushed and pulled apart in the rift valley. This same divergent boundary is responsible for the formation of the Red Sea, The gulf of Aquba and the Dead Sea.

According to the theory of plate yectonisthere is an upwelling of a convection current. As the magma rises at the divergent boundary the semi liquid mantle moves in to opposite directions. This sideways movement creates the Great Rift Valley, the volcanic mountains of Mt. Kenya, Mt. Kilamanjaro. and the creation of small oceans.
