A mirage is an optical phenomenon that involves the physics of refraction, or the bending of light rays. Most people associate a mirage with water appearing in a hot desert.A mirage occurs usually during a hot and sunny day when the air just above the ground is warmer than the air higher up. When this happens, the light rays from the cooler air traveling into the warmer air are refracted, or bent upwards. The resulting effect produces the illusion of water on a hot desert highway.
