The thing we know about Newton'sfirst law is that, if any object which is at rest stays at rest and any object which is in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction till it is acted upon by an unbalanced force. ... And forces are also described as a push or pull on an object.

Newton's first law states that every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force. This is normally taken as the definition of inertia.
