The basal cell layer contains cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes produce the skin coloring or pigment known as melanin, which gives skin its tan or brown color and helps protectthe deeper layers of the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

Answer:

epidermis

The epidermis also contains other types of cells with special functions: Melanocytes produce and store a black pigment called melanin. They produce more melanin when your skin is exposed to sunlight, which is why it becomes darker. This protects the skin from the sun's harmful UV rays.
