At the time of the initial formation of Earth, the planet went through a phase of differentiation, which permitted the heaviest elements to sink to the middle section, and the lighter ones to rise to the surface. On the basis of the chemical composition, the Earth is differentiated into many layers, that is, crust, mantle, outer core, and the inner core.

On the basis of the physical characteristics, the layers of the Earth are differentiated into lithosphere, asthenosphere, and mesosphere. Of the mentioned layers, the lithosphere is the outermost layer of the Earth, that is, of 100 kilometers in thickness, and it exhibits the pressure in the range of 75 GPa to 110 GPa, that is, up to 109 GPa.
