Binomial Nomenclature: All the living species are named using two terms. That is, they have two names. They are,

  • A generic name which denotes the genus.
  • A specific name which denotes the species.

Binomial nomenclature follows certain rules and is a formal way of naming the living organisms.

The first part is always the generic name and it always italicized and starts with a capital letter.

The second part is the species name and is italicized.

So, Generic name followed by specific name is the hierarchy.

Eg: Homo sapiens

The hierarchy is an arrangement of items in which the items are represented in a certain sequence.

Binomial nomenclature is actually a kind of naming system which is used for living things which is used by all scientists. According to this all the species has a dual-part scientific name.

The first part of a scientific name is called the genus which is the name for a small group of closely related organisms whereas the second part of a scientific name is the specific epithet which is used to identify certain species.
