It’s alright if you are not the best in the room
I am driving the same bicycle on the same road since last 9 years for 3km. Every turn, every slope of the road is friendly to me. I drive fast and fast enough to beat other cyclists on that road (you can challenge me there :P ). I care about the speed with which I drive. Many times I get distracted by the attractive stuff.
But one day something happened.
An old man on the bike around at 7 pm overtook me. Due to poor light and bad condition of the road, his speed was slow but fast enough to beat me.
I decided to overtake him.
I started paddling hard. I wasn’t thinking how fast I was driving, I was thinking how much faster I should go. I was not looking at the attractive things, I was looking at the distance between him and me. I was thinking how can I reduce the distance. I was driving fast enough to sweat even in November.
Even with all this struggle, I wasn't able to overtake him.
But because of this struggle, I covered the distance with least time ever.
When I came across someone who was faster than me on road, I drove faster. Pushed my limits, didn’t get distracted. Only thing I was thinking was how can I drive faster. I was focused.
This is what happens when are in a room with people better than you. You push your self. You don't think how much you have done, you think what more needs to be done. You do the seemingly impossible things. You stay focused. And in-between the process you become the better version of yourself.
This is why studying in top notch colleges, like IITs, NITs, working in top-notch companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft is considered as an excellent opportunity because the kind of people you meet there are better than you in one aspect or other .
So, next time you find the room with people better than you consider it as an opportunity to excel.
