Given  : different linear functions points on a coordinate plane

To find :  Which linear function has the steepest slope?

Solution:

a line goes through points (0, 1) and (1, -2)

Slope =  (-2 - 1)/(1 - 0) = -3/1  = - 3

x        y

3        10

6        13

9        16

12       19

Slope = ( 13 - 10)/(6 - 3) = 3/3 = 1

or ( 16 - 10)/(9-3) =   6/6 = 1

( 19 - 10)/(12 - 3) = 9/9 = 1

Hence slope of table is 1

a line goes through points (0, - 2) and (1, 0).

Slope = (0 -(-2))/(1 - 0)  =  2/1 = 1

x         y

2        -4

4        -12

6        -20

8        -28

Slope = ( -12 - (-4))/(4 - 2) = -8/2  =  -4

linear function  with maximum magnitude of slope is steepest function

Slope of table 2 is steepest
