Different merino breeds have been cross-bred with Indian sheep varieties like Gaddi, Bhakarwal, Poonchi, Chokla, Nali etc. to produce the merino-type sheep. The local breeds are those found in the region of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Rajasthan while the Merinos are Rambouillet and Soviet Merinos.
The breed called Bharath Merino were developed by cross-breeding Chokla and Nali sheep with the above foreign varieties.
