The Chromosomes which decides the sex of a person are called sex chromosomes. The sex of a person depends upon what happens at the time of fertilisation. The following cases are responsible for Male/Female sex of a person

1) If a sperm carrying X chromosome fertilises a ovum or egg carrying Y chromosomes then the child born will be girl because the child will have XX combination of sex chromosome.

2) if a sperm carrying Y chromosome fertilises an ovum or egg carrying X chromosome then the child born will be a boy because the child will have XY combination of sex chromosome.

Therefore it is the sperm which is responsible for sex of a person.
