It is known that many animals have evolved elaborate designs and colour patterns due to sexual selection and aposematism. Many birds, reptiles, amphibians, arthropods and fish have brightly coloured bodies, displaying almost all the colours in the colour spectrum. Mammals however are only limited to earthy tones such as browns reds blacks and yellows. This is due to the fact that mammals only produce two kinds of pigments for hair. But why is this so on an evolutionary standpoint?
