Temporary hardness is caused by dissolved calcium hydrogencarbonate (which is removed by boiling). Permanent hardness is caused by dissolved calcium sulfate (which is not removed by boiling). Water can be softened using washing soda or an ion-exchange resin

Boiling

Explanation:

The method that cannot be used to remove the hardness of water is Boiling.

  • By boiling only temporary hardness can be removed that is caused by dissolved calcium hydrogen carbonate
  • Boiling cannot remove permanent hardness that is caused by dissolved calcium sulfate

The reason for it is -

Permanent hardness is the hardness caused by mineral content(presence of calcium sulfate and/or magnesium sulfates) present in water that can hardly be removed by boiling. These do not precipitate out on an increase in temperature.
