Answer:

Explanation:

In the changing world scenario with regard to industry and the job market, there is now an overpowering need for skilled workers. However, the definition of 'skill' in India, and the world in general, has also changed over recent years.

India is relatively young as a nation with around 28 million youth population being added every year. More than 50 per cent of its population is below the age of 25 and more than 65 per cent are aged below 35. In 2020, the average age of an Indian will be expectedly 29 years, while it will be 37 for China and 48 for Japan.

As President Pranab Mukherjee said in a recently organised CII event in Kolkata, "We often boast about India's demographic dividend. But the question that arises is what we do with this if we cannot skill them, if we cannot educate them and cannot enhance their employability."

India Today spoke to three experts on the issues of skill development in Indian schools today and how to overcome them:

  •   Nayana Mallapurkar, Program Head, TISS School of Vocational Education
  •    Dr Lakshmi Mohan, Campus Head, ITM Business School
  •    Siddarth Bharwani, Vice President, Jetking Infotrain Limited

Question :

Which methods for going to school require some skill for practice ?

Answer:

Following are the methods which require some skill for practice while going to school :

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Complexity and developing innovative solutions in response will become important to keep up with future industries that include data analytics, artificial intelligence, and a crossroads of many disciplines and research areas. Many curricula move away from textbook-based learning and teach analytical thinking in their teaching styles.

  • Creativity

Another skill is creativity which has always been an important tool for the workforce, but  it will become even more important in the future work environment as increasing automation crowds out many simple tasks. A good curriculum will engage students in their studies and encourage them to develop creative solutions and approaches.

  • Technological Literacy

Children today may need to be exposed to new technologies once their malleable minds are ready to accept them. You will grow up in an age of unprecedented technological advances, with information all around you and new advances by the minute. Being able to keep up in areas like robotics, AI and machine learning will be important for your development as the worker of the future. It's up to a good school to give its students opportunities to interact  with new technologies and integrate them into everyday learning.

  • Cognitive Flexibility

Adaptability and flexibility in mindset will be key in the globalized and multidisciplinary future, where people from all over the world and from different cultures will interact to solve problems based on biology, physics and artificial based intelligence, mechanical engineering, sociology and a variety of other fields. The quality of a school's curriculum and the way it educates its students in the learning and support environment determines how effectively children learn this skill.

  • Collaboration

Most 21st-century workplace tasks require large-scale collaboration with multiple stakeholders, each with different specializations. Strong collaborative skills are needed to coordinate with others and achieve common goals. Collaboration, teamwork and effective communication with others will therefore be important skills to be taught to today's students  as they need to be prepared to work collaboratively with others as we move forward.
