Bicameral legislatures are used in a model of government called representative democracy (or indirect democracy). In representative democracy, the citizens of a country vote representatives who will, in turn, vote on laws (as opposed to the citizens voting on laws themselves, which would be called 'direct' democracy). The assembly in which these representatives vote on laws is called a 'legislature.' A bicameral legislature features two different houses, usually with different types of members who are selected in different processes. For example, the bicameral legislature of the United States is comprised of the House of Representatives, which contains representatives elected by different districts created in proportion to the population of individual states, and the Senate, which contains Senators who are elected by an entire state (with each state electing two Senators).
